Recent mentions about AVION and his record label Crossing have included “hotly tipped”, “renowned” and that “his music is not for the faint of heart”. If you are already familiar with the German DJ, producer and label owner, these words will come as little surprise.
AVION grew up in Rostock in the northern part of Germany. Jeff Mills was a primary influence during these formative years, Björk and Depeche Mode are also often mentioned in this context. The cited inspirers might be a direct explanation for his lust to experiment within his own productions. AVION’s techno is vigorous and driving, but rests on a collage-like backdrop of deep textured noise and clear-cut yet meshed sounds. His style is dramatic in its simplicity. As a DJ AVION is a risk taker, he dares to play with various genres in a dramatic yet perfectly seamless way. He makes it clear that he is on a non-linear treasure hunt; going from straightforward techno territory into more housey domains; from deep to high; keeping the floor on its toes.
To date AVION has released material on Index Marcel Fengler, District 66, Stress Research and Pure. Six of the Crossing releases bears his name as solo EP’s, here he has also featured first-rate remixers such as Norman Nodge and Thomas Hessler to reshape his own work. AVION also collaborated with Hessler for the recent Crossing 12-inch, commemorating its 10th release.
